The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead -A Film By Derek Jarman)

English text
Who had got the idea of this box set ?
I came up with the idea when I was working with the Inspiral Carpets in 2013/14. They were on a cassette compilation from 1988, entitled Manchester North Of England. This cassette boasted lots of bands who went onto be significant (Inspirals, James, etc.) so we got talking about a box set which properly told the story of indie music from Manchester. In the end, we used the title and photo from the cassette!
What were your difficulties about the tracklisting ?
Well, it took a long time to track down many of the artists. Also, we couldn’t clear the Smiths and it takes a long time with some record companies to clear certain tracks. It’s also important to get the track listing right so we involved Manchester District Music Archive and their members suggested changes to the track listing, which we took on board. Later, you have to get all the bands to sign licensing agreements so that takes a lot of work and patience, and then you need to find mastering sources – but it’s mostly about being organised and persistent.
Do you have discover some bands ?
Do you mean, bands I’d not heard of? Absolutely. Maybe a quarter of the artists on the box set I’d never heard of before researching the project. You might little bands like The Days and The Paperboys and Bee Vamp, who only put one single out, or The Jerks, who didn’t even get that far.
What are your favorite songs ? Why ?
‘Faith’ by Manicured Noise has an amazing post-punk energy and great melody and sense of yearning. ‘Discipline’ by Gods Gift is like The Fall but tougher. ‘Sons Of The Stage’ was always a favourite of mine by World Of Twist – I love the mix of psychedelia, funk and indie, it’s compleyely unique. Also, ‘Perfume’ by Paris Angels, which I bought at the time, which still has an amazing sense of teenage optimism about it.
So… Do you do the same thing for Liverpool ?
That’s the plan!
